Visiting Assistant Professor of World Languages and Cultures

Dr. Guilherme (Gui) Von Streber is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish at Berry College in Rome, GA. He holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies from Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Lee University in Cleveland, TN. His research interests are in qualitative sociolinguistics, specifically in Language Policy and Planning, language ideologies, and linguistic ethnographies. He also focuses on language pedagogy and modern Latin American history. Between August 2020 and June 2021, he conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Asunción, Paraguay, which culminated in his doctoral dissertation “Voices of Bilingualism: a Linguistic Ethnography at a Bilingual School in Asunción, Paraguay.” Before joining Berry College, Dr. Von Streber was an Instructor and later a Visiting Assistant Professor at Emory University, where he taught Spanish, Portuguese, and Linguistic courses at all levels of the curriculum in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. Dr. Von Streber has extensive involvement in summer study abroad programs in countries such as Colombia and Spain. His article “Paraguay y las complejidades de una nación bilingüe” was published in the international journal Encuentros. He has presented his research at national and international institutions including the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, Emory University, Universidad Nacional de Asunción, in Paraguay, Centro de Estudios Mayas y Culturas Ancestrales in Guatemala, and more. Dr. Von Streber was born in Brazil, lived in Paraguay, and currently resides in the US.
